Background
An innovative and integrated approach to Dental Implant training for general dental practitioners
Dental implants are a well documented treatment modality to replace missing tooth/teeth. There is strong evidence that dental implants are effective in restoring a single missing tooth, multiple missing teeth and edentulous jaws. Different approaches and techniques are required for placing and restoring dental implants ranging from straightforward cases to the more advanced and complex cases. There are conventional approaches and digital methods in the planning and execution of treatment including free-hand flap or flapless surgery, computer simulated planning and placement, computer guided surgery using navigation and conventional and computerized driven prosthetic reconstruction including various CAD/CAM processes.
To provide dental implant treatment of the highest quality and standards to patients, it is essential for clinicians to have the knowledge base, theoretical and clinical understanding of the fundamental principles of osseointegration and their application to restoring function and aesthetics using dental implants in patients with and without ridge deficiency. This knowledge and understanding will underpin the basic principles of treatment execution enabling high quality treatment outcomes. Therefore, there is a wide scope of knowledge and know-how that the clinicians need to acquire before treating their patients to ensure that dental implant treatment is safely and predictably delivered.
This international program is unique in that the curriculum covers the fundamentals and essentials of provision of Implant treatment across 5 component parts which include Implant surgery, Implant Prosthetics, Digital Dentistry, Temporomandibular Joints and Occlusion. The component parts interface with each other and teaching and learning is delivered via 3 pillars which include contact (direct face to face), distance and self-directed and reflective learning.
An innovative and integrated approach to dental implantology training is designed for general dental practitioners in the hope of developing an interest in practising high standard dental implantology. It also provides the basis and potential for practitioners to proceed to higher training and specialization. Training programs are being developed by Hong Kong Institute of Implant Dentistry in association with The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, U.K. The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, with a history of over 500 years, is one of the most renowned educational and examination bodies in the medical and dental professions worldwide.
